We have for some time wanted to be part of a new CSR-project where we could get more involved on a personal level. There are a lot of great causes to be involved with, but for us it was important that we could make a difference using our knowledge and experience. After an initial meeting with Mind Your Own Business we knew that this was the right partner for us.
Mind Your Own Business is a Danish organization that helps young boys to develop professionally and personally through the MYOB Program and the MYOB Academy.
MYOB – The right CSR partner for Admincontrol DK
When getting involved with CSR there are certain factors you need to evaluate, like if that partner you consider working with shares your values and whether it`s contributing to something you belive in. We feel that MYOB is a perfect match for Admincontrol. We knew that we were going to work with boys from vulnerable residential areas and help them on a journey to create their own micro businesses, and we couldn`t wait to get started.
Before meeting the boys, MYOB set up a meeting with all the different collaboration partners, so that we could get to know one another and share our expectations about the road ahead.
It was truly inspiring to be in the same room with so many passionate people, all ready to help these boys in the best way possible. In this first meeting we were presented with a “game plan” for all scheduled activities over the next nine months, including who should be present where and when.
First meeting with the boys
We are in postal code 2860 on a dark and cold October evening in 2019. We meet up at Høje Gladsaze Torv, and the excitement can be felt in the air. Two of the project managers from MYOB greets us along with the venture pilots who will follow the boys on a weekly basis.
Even though we are accustomed to establishing relations with some of the most influential businesspeople in Denmark, we still get a feeling of uncertainty and performance anxiety before we meet the group. We really want to be at our best as role models for these young boys.
Opposites meets and relations are created
Finally, the door opens and one by one the boys come out. They look so cool as they walk in with their hoodies and swagger across the floor and line up in front of the rest of us.
I bet they are as nervous as we are, but they look at each other with confidence. The first thought I have was that we are clearly overdressed for the situation – in an effort to make a great impression, we have put on blazers, matching shoes, and ties. Suddenly we feel a bit out of place and try to tone it down with casual body language.
It`s clearly a meeting between two different cultures, and it feels exhilarating and a bit scary at the same time. But everybody is equally excited to be here, and there are big smiles and hopeful eyes throughout the room.
One of the project managers breaks the silence and explain the agenda for the meeting:
“Today you are getting to know each other”.
Throughout the next few hours, we have several exercises to loosen up the mood, learn names and backgrounds, etc. In one of them, one of the boys starts to stutter and almost hyperventilates because he is so nervous speaking in front the group. But the rest of the boys are there for him in an instant, giving him the support he needs to continue:
“Come on, you can do it!”.
It`s so moving to see this, and not the least it`s a moment we learn from.
Fast forward nine months. They boys are up on a stage, excited and proud and ready to present their results and what they have learned. It`s the Business Award, the final showcase, and all the micro business owners and mentors are gathered for one last time.
Looking back at these past months, the boys – with some help from us and the venture pilots – have fought their way through a development of spectacular dimensions.
They have identified a problem they are passionate about solving, been working as a team, delegated tasks between themselves, developed prototypes, and set up meetings with the right persons to launch their product. Now they are standing in font us on a stage, with hundreds of people, and talking about their ambitions, plans, and results. And through it all, they have backed each other up 100% of the way.
There wasn`t a single dry eye in the room that evening, goose bumps all around and a roaring ovation from the crowd. What a fantastic event this was for us and the boys!
The audience and judges were so impressed with all they have shown us in their presentations.
Reflections on MYOB and the road ahead
We were missing something in our everyday life, where the general focus is on KPIs, budgets, streamlining, optimizing, and growth. We also wanted to make difference for somebody other than just our business partners. MYOB was the right partner for us to meet these needs by creating the framework that makes it possible for us to use our competence and knowledge to help others.
When working with MYOB you are hands on, and it is such an amazing feeling to be able to see the change in a person`s life and to know that you have contributed to it.
We joined because we wanted to utilize our knowledge, and we got back everything we gave by tenfold! We have learned so much from our relations with the boys, and the emotional side of this was truly one of the best aspects of partnering up with MYOB. After every meeting with the boys, typically until late in the evening, we left bursting with energy and a renewed drive to help the boys reach their goals. And we were so proud when they did!
We are just about to start up a new cycle with a new group of boys this fall, and we can`t wait to see where this takes us..
In the later years, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) have become more prominent in the business world. Admincontrol have been a proud contributor to Sabona since 2012 and we also have our own CSR Officer , Nina Felic. She serves as our steering compass when it comes to CSR.
